Sylvia was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She grew up in the small town of Montross, Virginia. She attended elementary, middle and high school and college in Virginia.
She worked as a professional and free lance model for 16 years and dancer 7 years for Crown ‘E’ Enterprises.
As a dancer, she met a wonderful man, Darrell Love. They dated only five months before they were married. They have been married for 27 years. Together they have been blessed to raise three wonderful, success and gifted children: two sons, Justin, 24 and Stephen, 21 and a daughter, Brittany, 19. They also have a grand-daughter, Shaniya.
Sylvia has been teaching pre-school and elementary age children for 30 years in both private and public schools. When her three children were very young, she decided to stay at home and raise them, but it did not stop her from teaching children. She opened and operated Love’s Christian Day Care in her home for eleven years. When her children became school age, she served as a substitute teacher and became a strong parent advocate.
Sylvia became a Parent Teacher Association/Parent Teacher Student Association (PTA/PTSA) president and/or vice-president for 8 years. She was also the PTA president of a school where she did not have any of her own children attending that school. She has attended 16 PTA conventions on the State and National level. She received the honor of becoming a Lifetime National PTA member. She attended the Board of Education meetings and spoke about many child related issues. She was also a Regional PTA Vice President and was responsible for 13 schools. Her job was to assist them in setting up school PTAs, understanding their duties as PTA officers, understanding PTA rules and regulations, etc. She was also appointed by a School Board Member to the Committee of 100 to oversee comprehensive and compensatory school issues and served on the Committee of 100 for seven years. Even though the Committee of 100 officially no longer exists, most of the members are still actively involved within the school system.
Sylvia developed an interested in American Sign Language (ASL) about 14 years ago. She and her children enrolled in a class. In their home, they had one day each week where spoken language was not allowed...only ASL. American Sign Language was more for fun then, so as the children grew older we did not use it as often.
Over the past 18 months, Sylvia has developed a sincere interest and love for ASL. She enrolled in classes again and is currently working with Deaf and Hard-of Hearing children in an educational system. She is developing her skills in ASL because she has a desire to interpret God’s word in church. She currently attends Greater St. John Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland where Bishop Kevin Gresham, Sr. is the Senior Pastor. She started a Sign Language Ministry at the church and believes that one day it will grow into a Deaf Ministry.
Sylvia joined B.E.L.I.E.V.E to inspire Deaf people to be entertained by song and dance through their language. In the past, she had not given any thought to becoming a member of an ASL performing group, but all things are possible When You BELIEVE.
In addition to ASL, Sylvia has a love for baskets, but not just any basket, it must be a Longaberger. She brought her first Longaberger basket 15 years ago and found a new love. She became a Longaberger consultant in 1997, so no doubt , when you meet her, not only will she talk about how much she loves ASL, but she will also tell you how much she loves Longaberger baskets and pottery. If you have not seen any of the products, go to www.longaberger.com and if you like what you see, then send her a message at sylvialove@whenyoubelieve.org
